These Spirulina Oat Bars are kid friendly, easy to make and packed with nutrients. There’s a good amount of protein from the spirulina powder, healthy fats and seeds and are perfect for breakfast or as a snack. They are sweetened with nutritious sweeteners from dates. They provide sufficient fiber and protein content for overall body development. I’ve made quite a number of recipes with Spirulina powder, you can find them at the end of this post. It’s an easier way of adding more protein and nutrients into your food with this superfood.
This recipe is created in Partnership with Tiwani Spirulina Ltd. All thoughts and opinions are 100% mine. Thank you for supporting the brands I work with that make it possible to create recipes at Miss Kabaki.
What Is Spirulina Powder?
Spirulina is a blue-green algae considered a superfood due to it’s excellent nutritional content and health benefits. High in protein, it is a complete protein meaning you get all the essential amino acids. It is grown in both fresh and salt water and requires less land and water as compared to plants and livestock. Here in Kenya, spirulina is grown by Tiwani Spirulina International, based in Mombasa South Coast. Because of it’s nutritional value and high protein content, it’s the best included in meals, smoothies, baked foods in small amounts.
Ingredients for These Spirulina Oat Bars
You’ll need the following ingredients
- Oats. This is the base of these bars. They provide complex carbohydrates that are easily digestible and fiber as well.
- Tiwani Spirulina powder for added protein and nutrients. You can find this at any Healthy U outlet.
- Flax seeds. These are healthy fats and are high in Omega 3 fatty acids
- Pumpkin Seeds. These are high in magnesium, anti oxidants and other nutrients like manganese, iron etc.
- Dates. A healthier way to sweeten the bars as you get important fiber and antioxidants.
- Coconut Oil. This helps bind the mixture together as well as to provide flavor.
- Salt. Salt helps to enhance the flavors of these bars.
How To Assemble These Spirulina Oat Bars
- Start by gathering the ingredients in bowl.
- Combine everything with a spoon until well mixed.
- Transfer the mixture into a blender or food processor. If using a blender you’ll need to keep mixing the mixture with a spoon to avoid sticking to the bottom. If the mixture becomes too dry, add a couple of drops of water. You want the mixture to resemble wet sand and come together when pressed between your hands.
- Transfer the crumbly mixture into a baking tray lined with parchment paper. This is the part where you involve the kids and have some fun pressing the mixture into the tray. Use your hands and a spoon to press the mixture evenly inside the baking tray. The kids will love being involved in the process and they’ll definitely enjoy eating the bars .
- Once evenly distributed and pressed firmly, refrigerate for at least an hour. This will harden the mixture and make it easier to cut into bars.
- After an hour, remove from fridge, using a sharp knife, run hot water over it and cut into bars as desired. Enjoy as a breakfast option or snacks.
HOW LONG DO THESE SPIRULINA OAT BARS LAST?

You can freeze them in a zip lock bag for up-to 3 months. Whenever you want to enjoy then, just thaw them a night before in the fridge or at room temperature to eat.

Notes
- You can adjust the spirulina powder to your liking. I love the taste and the color so I added 3 tablespoons.
- Feel free to add other seeds or nuts. Chia seeds, almonds and peanuts would work best with this recipe.
- Feel free to substitute the coconut oil with any nut butter you like, e.g. peanut butter or cashew butter. You need a butter or oil that can hold the mixture together as well as provide flavor.
- Use any baking tin size to assemble the mixture. Be sure to adjust the amounts to fit your baking tin of preference.
